中文數字轉換成英文的唸法

使用數字英文時，必須事先瞭解中英文在表達上的差一點，再透過不斷地練習，直到能夠直覺反應，將中文數字快速地轉換成英文，以求有效、正確地與人溝通。

前些日子在電視「百萬小學堂」的電視節目中，有一則英文考題：「Add 12 to the product of 5 and 6，等於」很多人因為不知道「product」在數學用語裡是「乘積」的意思，所以答不吃來，其實這個題目可以翻譯成『「在5和6的乘績＋12」等於多少？』，答案就是42。

這讓我想起以前剛進外商時，每次討論業績目標或預算時，自己總是慢半拍，原因就在於老外的數字用法和我們不同。英文的數字用法是以千為單位，往上加3個零，例如 Thousand (1,000 ;千)、Million (1,000,000；100萬)、Billion (1,000,000,000 ；10億)、Trillion (1,000,000,000,000 ；1兆)，以此類推。然而，中文卻是以4個零為基準，例如萬（10,000）、億(100,000,000)等，所以當我們想講「一萬」，腦中會直譯成「one xxx」，而不是「10  thousand」。

此外，老美習慣以「美元」為計算基礎，所以在溝通數字前，必須先將台幣換算成美元，他們才比較能感覺這個數字的大小。而在看報表時，也要注意「基本單位」是什麼，如果數字太大，一般都會以千、百萬或十億為單位，讓報表上的數字不會太冗長。

還要補充的一點是，有些聽起來較容易混淆的數字，也要格外留心，例如13與30、14與40、15與50、16與60、17與70、19與90。當你想說這個月的業績做到「forty milliion」，對方可能會聽成「fourteen million」，此時可以在補充強調「forty, four zero」。

不過，數字的英文念法並非千篇一律，就好比「零」可以念成「zero」，也可以讀成英文字母的「O」，可依照使用時機加以變通，例如用在金錢、電話號碼或小數等，念法就不盡相同。下面是不同情況下，各種數字的英文念法。

「一般數字」的英文念法：

• 1,100：one thousand, one hundred (數字有加逗點的，就不念成and)
• 932811：night-three two eight double one

「分數」的英文念法：

• 1/2：one half ; one over two
• 1/4：one-foruth ; one quarter
• 3/7：three-sevenths
• 5 2/3：five and two-thirds
• 4/3：four-thirds
• 159/234：one hundred and fifty-nine over two hundred and thirty-four

「小數」的英文念法：小數點後面的數字，一律一個一個念。

• 1.5：one point five
• 0.23：zero point two three
• 3,485.3451：three thousand four hundred and eighty-five point three-four-five-one
• 0.5%：(zero) point five percent (zero可省略)
• 95.99%：ninety-five point nine nine percent
• 50 bps（基本點）：fivety basis points (就等於0.5%)

「電話號碼」的英文念法：

註１：習慣上會一個字一個字的念，以求清楚，但有時為了方便起見，最後4個數字可以兩個一起念。
註２：在國外有時候會看到電話號碼中夾雜英文字，例如 1-800-PIN-DROP，這是因為電話鍵盤上的每個數字按鍵都會有對應的英文字母，例如2對應到ABC，3對應到DEF，所以上述電話號碼就可以轉成 1-800-746-3767，以利記憶。這有點像台灣商家喜歡用電話的諧音（2882-5252：餓爸爸餓-我餓我餓）。

• 770-2145：seven seven zero, two one four five seven o, twenty-one forty-five
• 234-5600：two three four, five six hundred
• 2588-9777：two-five-double eight, nine-triple seven
• 0920-920-920：zero-nine-two-zero, ine-two-zero, nine-two-zero
• 國家號碼：country code
• 區域號碼：area code
• 城市碼：city code

「序數」的英文念法：

• 第一：first (1^st)
• 第二：second (2^nd)
• 第三：third (3^rd)
• 第四：fourth (4^th)
• 第五：fifth (5^th)
• 第八：eighth (8^th)
• 第九：ninth (9^th)
• 第六十：sixtieth (60^th)
• 第六十九：sixty-nith (69^th)

「金錢」的英文念法：

• $49.50：forth-nine dollars and fisty cents
• $250.45：two fifty forty-five （dollars, cents, and 可省略）
• 台幣100元：one hundred NT dollars
• 1000日圓：one thousand Yen

「年代」的英文念法：

• 1947：nineteen forty-seven
• 1903：nineteen-o-three (字母「o」代表數字「0」)
• 2005：two thousand five 或 two-o-o-five
• 2010：two thousand ten 或 twenty ten

「溫度」的英文念法：

• 98°F：ninety-eight degree Fahrenheit
• -8°C：minus eight degree Centigrade

「時間」的英文念法：

• 4:28：four twenty-eight
• 4:05：five past four
• 3:50：ten to four
• 5:30：five and half

「其他」的英文念法：

• 10m x 15m：ten meters by fifteen meters
• 五樓：fifth floor
• 個位數：single digit
• 兩位數：double digit
